Lot Essay

The artist spent most of his adult life in the West. He went to San Francisco in 1907 and studied with Jules Pagès at the San Francisco Institute of Art. He moved to Los Angeles in 1916, then went to Paris in 1925 to study with Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian. He returned to the United States before World War II. In 1955 he had a one-person exhibition at the Bridgestone Museum, Tokyo.
