While mother-of-pearl inlay is often seen in lacquered furniture, it was less commonly used for inlaid decoration on hardwood furniture. For examples of this kind of decoration see the zitan footrest and the door of a square-corner cabinet illustrated by Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture, Hong Kong, 1990, p. 142, figs. 4.36a and b. Compare the recessed-leg painting table with inset lacquered top with inlaid mother-of-pearl floral decoration illustrated by R.H. Ellsworth, Chinese Furniture, New York, 1970, pp. 186 and 256, no. 90.
