A Pair of Painted Stucco Figures of Bodhisattva

Well modeled standing with hands clasped within the full sleeves of their long flowing robes with wind-swept ends, their bare feet protruding from beneath the hem, the full-cheeked faces modeled with small mouths and almost closed eyes, beneath hair dressed in snail curls below a globular usnisa, with traces of red pigment and gilding on a white slip

These unusual figures appear to be related to, but earlier than, the Ming dynasty stucco figures of bodhisattva wearing similar robes with wind-blown sleevs and hems arranged in rows in the Shuanglin Temple, illustrated in Buddhist Sculpture of Shanxi Province, Beijing, 1991, pl. 172.
