A Rare Green-Glazed Pottery Duck-Form Rhyton
Tang Dynasty
Hollow molded and well modeled as a plump-bodied duck with neck arched backwards over the opening between the feathered wings so that the open beak rests atop the rim of the flower-form cup molded on the exterior of some of the petals with foliate decoration, the lower body decorated in low relief with foliate scroll reserved against a granulated ground, covered overall with a glaze of bright green tone

A similarly modeled cup covered with a splashed sancai glaze in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art was illustrated by E. Schloss in the catalogue of the exhibition, Foreigners in Ancient Chinese Art, China House Gallery, The China Institute in America, New York, 1969, no. 64 and another formerly in the collection of the Tianjin Bureau for the Administration of Cultural Relics is illustrated in Treasures from Hebei Provincial Museum, 1999, p. 205, no. 59.
