A Large Rare Famille Verte Molded Rouleau Vase
18th/19th Century
The sides molded in high relief with a scene of the immortals and attendants in the Daoist Paradise, some borne on multi-colored clouds above those, including Shoulao seated beside a deer, more earthbound on grassy ledges, while another group forms a procession atop frothing waves, the scene interrupted on one side by a gnarled pine tree standing amidst trailing clouds, with landscape cartouches reserved on a band of blossoming branches on the shoulder and a group of scholars examining a scroll, and a crane on the neck

Lot Essay

No other famille verte vase of this large size and form with such elaborately and boldly molded decoration appears to be published. Compare the well-known pair of large famille verte rouleau vases of earlier date, also decorated with molded decoration, but in lower relief, and with scenes from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, in The Taft Museum, Cincinnati, Ohio, illustrated by A. du Boulay and D.T. Johnson, The Taft Museum, Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, New York, 1995, catalogue pp. 642-644. Also illustrated in the catalogue, p. 648, is a smaller vase (175/8 in.) of tapering square form, decorated with The Three Star Gods in high rounded relief, similar to the molding on the present lot, dated to the Kangxi period. Another smaller famille verte vase also molded in high relief with the Eight Immortals, dated Kangxi, is in the Salting Collection, illustrated by C. Monkhouse, A History and Description of Chinese Porcelain, London, pl. XIV.
