Compare the covered jar of similar form illustrated by C.J.A. Jörg, Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmusuem, Amsterdam: The Ming and Qing Dynasties, Amsterdam, 1997, no. 106, where it is noted that the Buddhistic lion finial was later painted in Europe in gold, grey and black.
