A Well-Painted Blue and White Bowl
Kangxi six-character mark in underglaze blue within a double circle and of the period
The exterior painted in deep, bright tones of blue with blossoming branches extending around the sides from the contorted tree trunk on one side, with similar branches in a medallion on the interior below a band of scalloped zigzag pattern at the rim; together with a blue and white leys jar, Jiajing six-character mark in underglaze blue within a double circle and of the period, the waisted body painted in deep blue with a band of conjoined lotus scroll set between a wavy zigzag band below and a band of foliate diaper above

Lot Essay

Another bowl painted in the same bold style and bearing a similar large Kangxi mark is illustrated by J. Ayers, The Baur Collection: Chinese Ceramics, Geneva, 1974, vol. IV, no. A 512, where the author notes that the style of the painting is that of the earlier part of the reign and refers to a similar mark illustrated by Sir Harry Garner, Oriental Blue and White, London, 1954, pl. 99(g), where it is described as an early Kangxi mark.
