Qianlong seal mark in underglaze blue and of the period
The well-potted body painted in inky tones of underglaze blue with a continuous frieze of bamboo, banana plants and rocks in a fenced garden, set between decorative borders above and below, and with detached demi-lotus on the spreading foot

Lot Essay

This vase is inspired by early Ming examples, such as the underglaze red-decorated vase in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Sekai toji zenshu, rev. ed., Tokyo, 1981, vol. 13, pl. 78.

Another Qianlong example is illustrated in Chinese Porcelain, The S.C. Ko Tianminlou Collection, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1987, Part I, pl. 62, and a panoramic view is also illustrated, Part II, p. 90. And one in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, is illustrated in Blue and White Ware of the Ch'ing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1968, Book II, pl. 12.
