BERG, NEW YORK* The following peachbloom-glazed vessels (lots 382-385) are examples of three of the eight classic shapes, ba da ma, or 'Eight Great Numbers', that were made specifically for the writing table. The peachbloom glaze was reserved exclusively for these sophisticated and distinguished Imperial porcelains. Only two complete sets appear to be published. One assembled from various collections in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, illustrated by S. Valenstein, A Handbook of Chinese Ceramics, New York, 1989 ed., p. 237, and another illustrated in The Tsui Museum of Art; Chinese Ceramics IV; Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1995, cover illustration and nos. 5-12, later sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 3 November 1996, lot 557. Individual peachbloom-glazed vessels similar to the present examples are in important museum and private collections throughout the world.

The slender, tapering high-shouldered body surmounted by a slender neck rising to a flared mouth, covered inside and out with a glaze of crushed strawberry tone shading in areas to bright apple green and pooling in a neat line above the unglazed foot
