An English ivory Hastilow style chess set
Circa 1850
Stained red and natural, with concentrically turned stems, the kings with Maltese cross finials, the queens with fleur-de-lis, the rooks as castellated towers surmounted by a smaller open ones
King -- 43/8in. (11.2cm.) high; pawn -- 1¾in. (4.5cm.) high

COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
Victor Keats, The Illustrated Guide to World Chess Sets, Batsford 1985. Page 126, ill. 148. shows a similar typical set made by the Hastilow family, who carved and sold sets through three generations between 1810-1904.
