COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
J McNab & C Wilkinson, Chess: East and West, Past and Present, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1968. Plates 44 and 49 illustrate two similar historical figurative sets made by Phyllis and Delphis Gardner. The two sisters were both sculptors working within the mode of the Arts and Crafts movement, having studied at the Slade School of Art London. Their father was a Greek archaelogist, Professor E A Gardner, who would have possibly inspired their specialisation in historical sets. These were mainly exported to the United States. Interestingly, the catalogue mentions that the pieces are individually marked on the base "Made in England", handwritten in ink.
