One side stained predominately crimson, the other natural, the knopped stems with incised geometeric patterning and bone finials
King 37/8in. (9.8cm.) high; pawn -- 1¾in. (4.5cm.) high

These sets were carved by the indigenous Tarascan Indians of Mexico until 1944. The bulbous stem is derived from the French St.Georege pattern.
Victor Keats, Illustrated Guide to World Chess Sets, Batsford Ltd 1985, page 225, ill.272 shows a similar example.
