Second half 19th century
Theme based on the Romans versus the Barbarians, the Roman side gilded, the kings and queens crowned, the rooks as elephants empty howdahs, all mounted on spool pedestals
King -- 37/8in. (10cm.); pawn -- 25/8in. (6.7cm.) high

A comparative lot was sold through these rooms, 25 June 1997, lot 702 and Phillips, Bond Street, 12 May 1997, lot 61.
The name 'Morphy' is derived from a presentation set made in 1859, cast in solid gold and silver for the American international chess champion Paul Morphy.
