COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
J McNab Dennis and Charles Wilkinson, Chess; East and West, Past and Present, A selection from the Gustavus A. Pfeiffer Collection, The Metropolitan Museum of Art 1968. A similar set is illustrated in plate 53, described as a portrait bust set depicting military leaders from World War One. The set carved by Max Nicolaus Niemeierm (born 1876), with the pearwood side illustrating the Germans versus the opposing Allied side.
