A German pearwood figural chess set
Second half 19th century
The opposing sides in lighter and darker hues, the kings and queens in medieval style royal regalia, the lighter king holding an orb and sceptre and the darker king with later replaced hand, the pawns individually carved as stout gentlemen in late 19th century dress, all on pedestal bases
King -- 4¾in. (12.1cm.); pawn -- 2½in. (6.5cm.) high
