An Italian lava and coral bust type chess set
Possibly circa 1800
The lava stone side carved to represent classical Roman busts, the king as Ceasar mounted on a tapering stem intricately carved with floral swags and crown pendants, the coral side carved to represent medieval figures, the king wearing a crown mounted on a stem carved with armorial trophies
King -- 3½in. (8.9cm.) high; pawn -- 21/8in. (5.5cm.) high

COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
Donald M Liddell,Chessmen, Harcourt, Brace and Co, 1937, Fig. 90 illustrates a comparable coral and lapis lazuli bust set, the carved bust pieces mounted on pedestal stems, from the J Maunoury chess collection.
Hans and Siegfried Winchmann, Chess, The Story of Chesspieces from Antiquity to Modern Times, Plate 157 illustrates the same set which is decribed as Italian, dating from 1800.
