Lot Essay

A hero of the American War of Independence, John Paul Jones (1747-1792) fought in one of the most famous naval battles in American history. Commanding the "Bonhomme Richard", Jones defeated two British War Ships, the "Serapis" and "Countess of Scarborough" in a 3½ hour long gun battle off the Yorkshire Coast on 23rd September 1779.
