Lot Essay

Elias Eliasz. van Vliet (1609-1652) was one of the few brassfounders of Amsterdam who stamped his products. During his life he used three stamps; two E's, two E's which are mirrored and one surmounted by a crown (to be found on the present lot). After 1642 he added a V to the stamp. The present lot can therefore be dated between 1627, when Elias first started working in Amsterdam and 1642 when he changed his stamp (B. Dubbe, 'Het Amsterdamse geelgietersambacht in de 17e eeuw', in Nederlands Kunsthistorisch Jaarboek 31(1980), pp. 137-153).
