Thales, son of Examyes of Miletus, was universally accounted one of the Seven Sages, and was said by Aristotle to have been the founder of physical science. This medal is one of the series by Belli depicting Greek and Roman generals, artists and scientists, which were later frequently passed on as antique (cf, Forrer, I pp.158-159, and Johnson-Martini, 'Le medaglie del secolo XVI, Milano, Civiche Raccolta Numismatiche' in Bollettino di Numismatica, 1988).
