The medal celebrates the Holy Year, declared by Pope Gregory VIII (Ugo Boncampagni of Bologna) in May 1574, which proved to be the most popular to date, attracting over 400,000 visitors to Rome. S Carlo Borromeo took part in the ceremonies, and among the visitors were Torquato Tasso, Alessandro and Ottavio Farnese, and Duke Ernst of Bavaria.
