A PAIR OF TUSCAN WALNUT AND PARCEL-GILT ARMCHAIRS
Each with rectangular back, seat and skirt covered in associated 17th Century Brussels tapestry woven in wools, silks and metal-thread, depicting to the back a crowned maiden holding a flaming heart and to the seat two youths holding a basket of fruits, the uprights headed by a grotesque mask and the moulded rectangular arms on baluster supports above square legs joined to the sides by moulded stretchers, one foot tipped, basically late 17th Century, restorations (2)

Lot Essay

A pair of walnut side chairs and an armchair from Bologna of nearly identical shape and retaining their original silk needlework upholstery are in the Museo Civico d'Arte Industriale e Galleria Davia Bargellini, Bologna (M. Medica, ed., 'Museo Civico d'Arte Industriale e Galleria Davia Bargellini', catalogue, Bologna, 1987, p. 185, cat. 121) while a further closely related Florentine walnut armchair of the mid-17th Century is in the church of Santa Felicita, Florence (A.M. Massinelli, Il Mobile Toscano, Milano, 1993, p. 166, fig. LVII). A closely related set of four armchairs, from the property of Mrs. Ambrose Congreve, Winkworth Manor, Ascot, Berkshire, was sold in these Rooms, 30 May 1968, lot 118.
