Lot Essay

This mirror belongs to a type of pier glass that developed in the second quarter of the 18th Century inspired by Venetian prototypes in multiple plated frames. A mirror with the same light frame surmounted by a plate with a pastoral scene is in the E. Gioberti Collection, Milan (S. Colombo, L'Arte del Mobile in Italia, Milan, 1975, plate 226), while a further example is in the Stupinigi palace, Turin (M. Tagliapietra Rasi, 'Museo dell'Arredamento Stupinigi, La Palazzina de caccia', Catalogue, Turin, 1966, fig. 124). A related Venetian mirror was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 15 October 1988, lot 83.
