[LINCOLN, Abraham]. "PORTE CRAYON," pseud of STROTHER, David Hunter. A pencil and crayon cartoon of President Lincoln entitled "The Trent Affair Nov. 1861," signed with initials "DHS" in lower right corner. 265 x 165 mm. Mounted on card, minor stains.

Under the pseudonym "Porte Crayon", Hunter worked as an illustrator for Harpers and produced a popular series on Southern life, complete with his illustrations, for that magazine in the 1850s. He served in the Union army during the Civil War and was brevetted Brigadier General at its close. The cartoon related to the Trent Affair, when the U.S. Navy intercepted the British warship Trent on the high seas and took Confederate diplomates Mason and Slidell prisoner. The incident, which mushroomed into a major crisis, nearly precipitated war with Great Britain at a critical juncture of the Civil War.
