Lot Essay

This is an alphabetical list of simple medicines indicating their properties and methods of preparation. A note on the flyleaf gives the name of the author as Hunayn ibn Ishaq, If he is indeed the author, this is a previously unrecorded work. He is the author of another work on medicine called Kitab fi asma' al-adwiyah al-mufradah 'ala huruf al-mu'jam.
Hunayn ibn Ishaq was the most famous translator of the Ancient texts of his time. He served at the court of the Caliph al-Mutawakkil as his personal physician and translated numerous medical and philosophical texts from the Greek.
This manuscript is written on good quality Persian paper of the 14th century with 7 laid lines per cm. and without chain lines or rib shadows. The manuscript has unusual titles written in a large and idiosyncratic form of Eastern kufic.
