This scene which this miniature depicts appears twice in the Ramayana, both at the beginning and at the end. This is the latter. The other version, in which the boys appear as bearded ascetics is No. 2 of the manuscript.
This is one of the most detailed and colourful of the miniatures. The composition of a seated ruler surrounded by courtiers with figures in the foreground and roof tops in the background is a standard in Mughal painting, but this example is remarkable in its use of colour and level of portraiture. The lyrical nature of the story is highlighted by the pairs of peacocks and monkeys playing on the roof.
