With lightly fluted sides and everted rim with lightly cusped raised lip, the interior covered with a lavender blue slip incised through in the centre to reveal a large medallion formed of interlaced arabesques, simple similar scrolling motifs around the rim, the exterior plain blue, the underside of the foot with underglaze blue tassle mark on white ground, small rim chip, hair crack

Lot Essay

This is an example of a rare group of Safavid ceramics. A similar example is in the Musée des arts décoratifs, Paris (L'Islam dans les collections nationales, exhibition catalogue, Paris, 1977, no.623, p.261). Another closely related example with central floral design is in the David Collection Copenhagen (Folsach, Kjeld v., Lundbaek, Torben and Mortensen, Peder (eds.): Sultan, Shah and Great Mughal, Copenhagen, 1996, no.23, pp.282-3). Three are in the Victoria and Albert Museum of which two are large (Pope, Arthur Upham: A Survey of Persian Art, Oxford, 1938, pls.805 and 806A), while one is smaller (Lane, Arthur: Later Islamic Pottery, London, 1957, pl.89B).
