A COLLECTION OF WORKS BY ANTON MAUVE JUN. (DUTCH, 1876-1962) (Lots 198-223) Anton Rudolf Mauve, also known as Mauve Junior, was born in The Hague on 10 December 1876. Following his studies at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (from 1894 until 1897), Mauve junior lived and worked in amongst others the painters colony Laren, Avereest, Bussum, Blaricum, Oldebroek and Veere. Being a fervent sailor, the artist also made several trips to Terschelling, Veere, the coast of France and South-Africa. Within his oeuvre consisting of marines, landscapes, portraits, figure pieces and townviews, his seascapes unmistakingly occupy a prominent position. Without making use of abundant details or spectacular painterly effects, Mauve concentrated on recording the endlessness of the sea. Only now and then does a flock of seagulls hover above the horizon or do boats glide past in a gust of wind. Just like his father, the well known Hague School painter Anton Mauve (Dutch, 1838-1888), Mauve Jun. employed a subdued and greyish palet to evoke the desired atmosphere. Even in his bustling impressions of London streetscenes, does the artist refrain from applying exuberant colours. The present collection of more than a hundred works from the artist's estate offers a great overview of this talented painter's oeuvre.
