A COLLECTION OF WORKS BY COR NOLTEE (DUTCH, 1903-1967)
(Lots 285-336)
Cor Noltee was born in The Hague in 1903 and received his artistic training at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten from amongst others Willem de Zwart.
Noltee already gave expression to his artistic talents at a young age and set out to paint donkeys on the beach of Scheveningen when only fourteen years old. Horses would remain a source of great inspiration throughout Noltee's career with his coarse and expressionistic renderings of workhorses at building sites eventually receiving great acclaim. Like the Amsterdam Impressionist painter G.H. Breitner, Cor Noltee cherished a great fascination for modern everyday subject matter as was found in the large capitals of Europe.
After roaming through Holland, Belgium and France throughout his early career, Cor Noltee settled in Dordrecht in 1938 and passionately recorded the city's growth and development until his death in 1967.
According to Cor Noltee, Dordrecht breathed an atmosphere that was unmatched by other Dutch cities: "Dat zware grijs en de tegenstelling, het lichte, dampige gamma. Je vindt het nergens". In order to capture this unique quality the artist regularly ventured out during the autumn and winter months, when rain, fog and snow covered the city's contours in a grey opaque veil. In contrast to Breitner, with whose oeuvre Cor Noltee's work has often been compared, the Dordrecht based artist also focussed on rendering his surroundings by means of tonal nuances and not only by bold colour contrasts. This vast and varied collection of works by the artist, comprising townviews, rural landscapes, still lifes and figure pieces, will thus not only illustrate Cor Noltee's indeptness to Breitner's artistic idiom but also underline his mastership in creating atmospheric landscapes in a soft and luminous palet. After achieving succesful results for the two previous sales including works by the artist, Christie's now presents the last part of a collection that perfectly reflects the divers nature of Cor Noltee's oeuvre.
