Bowler visited Mauritius twice, firstly on a round trip from Cape Town on the Union Mail Steam Company's Anglian from December 1865 to February 1866 and secondly en route to England in 1868. The first trip 'for the purpose of taking sketches of the principal headlands and harbours on our coast and that of Mauritius to be afterwards elaborated into a series of finished landscapes which will ere long adorn the saloon of the splendid steamship, the Norseman' (S.A. Advertiser and Mail, 18 April 1866) resulted in an album of pencil and wash sketches (now lost) and Bowler planned a subscription album of twenty views lithographed 'in treble tints by Messrs. Day & Son' (which was never realised). On his second visit he contracted malaria and while he is thought to have been working on supplementary views for the projected Mauritian album, Bradlow in 1970 recorded no extant works from this second visit (F.R.
