Oerder was South Africa's first official war artist, joining the Boer forces and sketching in the field in 1899, before being interned at the camp on Meintjieskop, where he continued to produce drawings and paintings. R. Greenwall (Artists & Illustrators of the Anglo-Boer War, Vlaeburg, 1992) records an oil entitled 'British Mounted Infantry' signed and dated 'Pretoria 1901' in his own collection (op. cit., p. 179).
