Lot Essay

The attribution has been kindly suggested by L. Meyer of the Kunsthistorisches Archiv, Munich, on the basis of a photograph, in a letter dated 14 July 1999. He compares it with the portrait of Elisabeth Charlotte Decker in the Goethe Museum, Frankfurt (S. Michaelis, Katalog der Gemälde, 1982, p.79, no.120, ill.) and he proposes a date of circa 1720, the year in which the painter moved from Hamburg to Frankfurt.
