Lot Essay

The prototypes with the sitters in full length and in the opposite direction, wearing State Robes, oil on canvases, 244 x 147 cm, are in the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle (O. Millar, Pictures in the Royal Collection: Tudor, Stuart and Early Georgian Pictures, I, 1963, pp.142/4, cat. nos.335 & 338, plates nos. 149 & 150). The rendering of Queen Mary in the present lot closely follows the original by Kneller, but King William is depicted wearing armour rather than State Robes.
