Lot Essay

Closely related to the oil by Taylor, also signed and dated 1813, now in the Dixson Galleries (DG100). The view was engraved, and published in April 1814 by James Whittle and Richard Holmes Laurie, London, although the model for the engraving appears to be the unsigned watercolour in a private collection (T. McCormick, First Views of Australia 1788-1825, Chippendale 1987, pp. 162-3). This latter watercolour and two other unsigned early Sydney views with a common provenance have been tentatively attributed to Taylor (T. McCormick, op. cit, p. 278) and are thought to have been intermediary drawings, after models by John Eyre, for the Whittle and Laurie engravings.
