Lot Essay

The main pink cartouche in the niche gives the name of the workshop: Sadaqiyani Qasitli. The small kufic inscriptions in the roundels say that this rug was made in the reign of Shah 'Abbas (!). The remainder of the inscriptions, in contrast to the koranic verses which are found in the Topkapi prayer rugs from which the design of this is derived, are Arabic secular wise sayings.
