O'Connor travelled to London in 1813 with Francis Danby and George Petrie. He had little success and soon had to return to Ireland to look after his orphaned sisters. Within a few years he was commissioned to paint some of his greatest works with a series of landscapes surrounding Westport House in Co. Mayo for the Marquess of Sligo, and Ballinrobe near Lough Mask in the same county for Courtney Kenny, the owner of the Bridge House in that busy market town. He later turned to painting well visited spots in and around Co. Dublin and Wicklow, 'the garden of Ireland', 'The Scalp' being one such frequented place.
