Donated by the artist to Eastbourne's Auction Sale in Aid of the Funds of the Red Cross Hospitals, 9 February 1916, lot 162, where purchased by the present owner's father.

In 1904 Orpen met Lottie while she was working as a washerwoman in the slum cottages of Paradise Walk. She became a favourite model and he painted her in the guise of a flower-seller, a servant girl and in the wash house in a series of portraits during 1905.
