Lot Essay

Donall O'Sullivan Beare, the Earl of Bearehaven (1560-1618), was awarded the Spanish Order of St. James of Compostella after he avowed his devotion to Philip III of Spain in 1601 and received a Spanish garrison in his castle at Dunboy. After the demolition of Dunboy led by Sir George Carew in 1602, O'Sullivan fled with his family to Spain where he was awarded the Knighthood of the Order of St. Iago, a pension, and the title of Earl Bearehaven by Philip III.
