A blue England v. Hungary International cap, 1953
In the above match played on 25th November 1953 at Wembley, Hungary defeated England 6-3. If ever there was a match that proved to be a watershed for England International football, then this was the one. England, undefeated at home to foreign opposition (apart from the often forgotten match against the Republic of Ireland, played at Goodison Park on 21st October 1949, which England lost 0-2) were resoundly beaten by the 'Magical Magyars" before 100,000 spectators. The England defence, in particular, had a torrid time trying to cope with tactics unknown to them. The Hungarians, using a deep centre-forward, with the inside men supporting the strikers, bought havoc to a usually formidable back line and Harry Johnston was pulled out of position leaving acres of space for the opposition to exploit. The Hungarian captain Ferenc Puskas, in particular, had a fruitful afternoon, scoring two goals and assisting Hidegkuti to his hat-trick, with right-half Bozik scoring once. In retrospect, it wasn't a particularly bad performance by England (the score at half-time was 4-3 to Hungary) rather a display by a Hungarian team that would have shattered any team
