Born Philip George Neal on 20th February 1951, his career began with his hometown team Irchester F.C. At the age of sixteen, he became an apprentice for Fourth Division Northampton Town and was a regular in the first team before turning professional in December 1968. In October 1974 he signed at the age of 23 for Liverpool (£66,000) and made his First Division debut within a month of joining the club, in the Merseyside Derby against Everton.
