The artists of the Vienna Secession developed the Art Nouveau movement in Austria. "Ver Sacrum" was the journal produced by the group and by 1903 it was in its sixth year of production. The magazine presented the work of leading International & Austrian artists including Charles R Mackintosh, Koloman Moser, Adolphe Böhm, Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffman and Alfred Roller.
Roller was a founder memeber of the Vienna Secession and designed the posters for the 4th, 9th, 12th, 14th and 16th exhibition. The 16th exhibition of the Vienna Secession presented for the first time the development of Impressionism in painting and sculpture in Austria.
Roller experimented with letter forms and developed new typographical styles in his designs. Ghislaine Wood comments that;
"Roller's Secession 16 Ausstellung 1903 reveals the extent to which lettering could become a decorative element, showing the tension between the function of the poster to communicate information and its role as a symbol of modern design". The V&A "Art Nouveau 1890-1914' p.160/161
