Lot Essay

May Milton is immortilised here in Lautrec's poster, and this is the extent of her fame. The English dancer performed for one season only in Paris travelling to New York shortly after, never to be heard of again. Lautrec's poster was indeed designed to advertise her American Tour, although it was only seen in France in the magazine 'Le Rire'. Lautrec also designed a similar composition for the dancer's lover, May Belfort in the same year.
