In 1956 Harry Callahan became the first photographer to receive the Graham Foundation award for advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, a $10,000 stipend which he used to live abroad the folowing year. In 1957 Frederick Sommer replaced Callahan for the year as Lecturer in Photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago. While there he taught design and studio photography and spent the year living with Aaron Siskind. It is believed that the photograph offered was acquired directly from the photographers by a relative of the present owners at in 1957.
