GERMAINE KRULL (1897-1985)
PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF CARLO RIM Carlo Rim, the pseudonym of Jean Marius Richard, was born in 1902 and his list of sucessive métiers is extensive: caricaturist, journalist, designer, novelist, essayist, he founded Jazz in 1928 which was one of the first modern picture magazines. Under the directorship of Lucien Vogel, Rim became editor of Vu magazine in August 1930. Rim appeared on the back cover of that issue of Vu photographed by Kertész in Luna Park distorting mirrors; an article inside this issue shows Rim in other forms. After leaving Vu he went on to write and direct 90 feature films including films as Justin de Marseille (1934), L'Armoire Volante (1946) and La Maison Bonnadieu (1951). He published a number of books and songs and later worked in television. Always a great supporter of photography, in 1930 he invited a wide range of photographers to exhibit their work in Second Salon de L' Araignée, an annual show for illustrators. The photography section was particularly diverse and included works by Abbott, Atget, Kertész, Krull, Parry and Tabard. The show was an extension of Rim's interest in the valid pleasures of everyday experiences, of widening the aesthetic parameters to include the old and the new, the more serious figures, and venacular and folk expressions. As Carlo Rim said in the catalogue for the exhibition, photography now had its own history (see Phillips, p. 46). Carlo Rim passed away December 3, 1989.

Lot Essay

Rim remembers in an 1988 interview how vibrant Krull was in portrait sessions with her sitters: "She was very ugly, but she was so passionate about photography that when she photographed you, she became beautiful. It is puzzling, but the fact of being photographed by Germaine Krull gave her a charm" (Sichel, p. 88).
