AN ART DECO EGYPTIAN REVIVAL DIAMOND AND GEM-SET BROOCH, LACLOCHE
Depicting an onyx, emerald and ruby figure playing an instrument flanked by openwork hieroglyphics within a pavé-set diamond lozenge shaped frame, mounted in platinum, with French assay marks, circa 1925
Signed Lacloche, Paris, No. 60950
The rigorously geometrical style of Art Deco derives its name from the famous Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels
Modernes held in Paris from April to October 1925. Famous Parisian
jewelers such as Lacloche, Cartier, Mauboussin and Van Cleef & Arpels amongst others were much influenced by Howard Carter and Lord
Carnarvon's discovery in 1922 of the tomb of Tutankhamen. Colored
gemstones served to inaugurate a passion for Egyptian decorative motifs such as hieroglyphs and ancient figural wall paintings of Eygptian
life.
