A rare late 19th-Century English poratble assay balance,
signed OERTLING LONDON, the two arms of the beam divided 1-9 on each side of the fulcrum, for use with rider weights, the axis of the beam located between two 'V' supports, the ends of the beams extended by fine steel pointers arranged to read against two graduated ivory arcs, raised on a lacquered-brass column with rectangular plinth base with twin screw release mechanism, the two removable silver pans with fine wire suspension pan-holders, arranged to stow when not in use on two sockel mounts, the beam scale mounted within a mahogany-framed casing with side-actuated release, the lower casing with two accessory drawers containing a collection of gold wire weights in fitted boxwood case, stamped on the underside 5695, the second drawer with tweezers, gold, platinum and silver foil weights, a nugget, two spare pans and a glass phial with mercury weights, the drawers with ivory pulls, the mahogany casing with framed glass slide and fall front secured by three brass latches -- 9in.
