A fine and unusual 19th-Century American Cosmosphere,
with a 7-inch (18cm.) diameter terrestrial globe made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and two polar calottes, the cartouche in the North Pacific reading IMPROVEMENT IN CONCENTRIC CELESTIAL & TERRESTRIAL GLOBES, PATENTED BY H. WILLIAMSON, NEW YORK, DEC. 3, 1867. Sold by HARPER & BROTHERS, Franklin Square, N.Y., the equatorial graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac, the oceans with an analemma, the continents outlined in green, with some nation states coloured in green, showing national boundaries in dotted outline, towns, cities, rivers, lakes, and the Great Wall of China, Tasmania labelled VANDIEMENS LAND, South Africa showing Hottentots and Kafferland, held on a brass axis within an unmarked brass meridian circle and a stamped meridian half-circle graduated 90°-0-90°, with a split horizon ring graduated in degrees of amplitude and azimuth, with compass directions, stamped G.C. WESSMAN NEW YORK MAKER, and PATENTED DEC.3.1867 No63, the whole held within a 12-inch (30.5cm.) diameter, glass sphere, made up of two hemispheres joined by a brass band, with a stamped brass hour dial and rotation mechanism at the bottom and top for the terrestrial globe and its mounting respectively, with a stamped brass meridian circle divided in four quadrants, held by a screw clamp mounting on a cast iron tripod stand with foliate decoration and double scroll feet -- 22½in.
