A fine 19th-Century Chinese ivory inclining compass with sundial,
signed on the underside made in Quanzhon by Jiang Hui, the folding pin-gnomon dial divided in hours, with adjustable brass support arranged to set against a table of twice thirteen different times of year (see below), the compass with finely modelled iron needle with brass cap, all lettering and characters incised and coloured in blue with red lining, the underside decorated with a mountainous lakeside landscape with willow trees and sailing vessels, signed with characters in red, contained in the original red silk-lined polished horn case, the underside and cover incised with characters in green and red, with brass hook and eye and red silk cord toggle -- 35/8in. (9.2cm.) long overall
