An unusual early 20th-Century German cinematograph and slide projector,
with a metal plate stamped Germany E.P. (Ernst Planck) with a spoked wheel with eagle's wings, in blued-steel with brass fittings and gilt decoration, with cast iron base, the lamp housing with double wick kerosene burner, the wick turners marked DUPLEX, the lifting back-flap with concave mirror on the inside, an elaborate chimney on the top and a 2-inch diameter condensing lens in the front, with two lens holders for film strips or for slides, the film holder in ebonised steel, lacquered brass and gilt scroll decoration run from a pulley on the side of the lamp housing with turning wheel with handle, incorporating a sprocket feed mechanism, fan-shaped shutter and Maltese cross, with rack and pinion focusing screw to primary lens, the slide holder similarly constructed -- 20in. (50.8cm.) high; with 11 hand-drawn and coloured glass slides with red edges, each numbered and marked E.P., depicting various scenes including a sea battle, a town square with a train in the background, four separate pastoral scenes, a circus, various characters riding a rabbit, a blackbird, a frog and a cockerel, and other scenes, also with three cans of film labelled 1 PHOTO ORIG. FILMS with the E.P. insignia on the lid, with some extra loose film, all hand-drawn and brightly coloured with various figurative subjects, also with a paper envelope for E. HERMANN PHOTOGRAPHISCVHE KUNSTANSTALT SPEZIALITÄT Photographie auf Postkarten, with one "photo-postcard", all contained in the original oak box, the lid applied with a colour printed trade label showing the cinematograph in action with a decorative border (lid cracked) -- 16in.
