In the manner of Gillows, circa 1790
Each crossbanded and radially veneered demilune top inlaid with central fan over a central frieze drawer flanked to each side by a hinged drawer front, each crossbanded and with fan-inlaid spandrels, over a pair of doors enclosing a shelved interior, flanked to each side by a further hinged door, each quarter-veneered and with central oval reserve, above a serpentine apron on outsplayed legs, the pulls probably later and stamped ENGLAND

This form of compass-fronted and medallion-enriched commode was popularised by Robert and James Adam's The Works in Architecture, London, 1774 (vol.11, pl.VIII, no.1). These commodes also relate to a pattern published in The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 1788, pl.10, fig.2.
