This fine pair of card tables display unusual fret carved decoration which would have originally been high-lighted by fine oil-gilding. They can be related to the Weller-Poley suite sold Christie's London, 3 July 1997, lots 20-23 inclusive. The design for this sweet may have been taken from Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director, First Edition, 1754, pl. IX.
